Last night, in bed, I heard the ocean. My
ear against the pillow, I heard waves. Like
the thick whoosh & pulse of a womb, in &
out of my ear, it moved. I felt it in
my skull. I tried to recall if I had
ever heard the ocean in a seashell.
Then wondered why, as a kid, I never
even tried to. I got out of bed &
followed the sound, stumbled past a sick dog,
a sobbing husband. The waves were crashing
against something. And I was both inside
& outside of it. In the dark of my
living room, I stood still. In the dark of
my living, I just stood there & waited.
