is now accepting submissions for its annual contests. The winners and runners-up will be published in our first-ever online issue next year. Submit online and send us the best you’ve got! First, though, read up on the general details:

All entries should include a cover letter with the submission’s title and author’s contact information (name, mailing address, telephone number, and email address). Your name and contact information must not appear anywhere else on the manuscript. You may submit multiple entries, but the entry fee must be paid for each new submission.

Winter Fiction Contest

DEADLINE: December 15, 2011
ENTRY FEE: $15
PRIZE: $1000 and publication in Phoebe 41.2

SUBMISSION SIZE: 1 piece per submission, up to 7500 words. Novel excerpts will not be considered.

JUDGE: David Means is the author of four story collections. He has won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for fiction, was a finalist for the National Book Critic Circle Award, and was shortlisted for the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Prize. His most recent collection, The Spot, was selected as a 2010 Notable Book by The New York Times. His stories have appeared in The New Yorker, Harper’s, Esquire, Zoetrope, McSweeney’s, and have been anthologized in Best American Short Stories, The O. Henry Prize Stories and The Ecco Book of Contemporary Short Fiction, edited by Joyce Carol Oates. Means lives in Nyack, New York.

Greg Grummer Poetry Award

DEADLINE: December 31st, 2011
ENTRY FEE: $15
PRIZE: $1000 and publication in Phoebe 41.2

SUBMISSION SIZE: Up to 4 poems per submission, totaling no more than 10 pages.

JUDGE: Matthea Harvey is the author of Sad Little Breathing Machine (Graywolf) and Pity the Bathtub Its Forced Embrace of the Human Form (Alice James Books). Her third book of poems, Modern Life (Graywolf) won the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. She has also published an illustrated children’s book, The Little General and the Giant Snowflake, illustrated by Elizabeth Zechel, published by Tin House Books. Her illustrated erasure, titled Of Lamb, with images by Amy Jean Porter, was published last year by McSweeney’s. Harvey is a contributing editor to jubilat and BOMB. She teaches poetry at Sarah Lawrence College.

Annual Creative Nonfiction Prize

PRIZE: $500 and publication in Phoebe 41.2

SUBMISSION SIZE: 1 piece per submission, up to 5000 words.

JUDGE: Mary Roach is The New York Times bestselling author of the books Bonk, Stiff, Spook, and, most recently, Packing for Mars. The Washington Post named her: “America’s funniest science writer.” The Wall Street Journal calls her a “witty and fearless reporter.” She has appeared on numerous media outlets, including NPR and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
