Winter Fiction Contest
Judge: Samantha Hunt

Samantha Hunt is the author of two books. The Invention of Everything Else, a novel about the life of Nikola Tesla, was a finalist for the Orange Prize and winner of the Bard Fiction Prize. The Seas won a National Book Foundation Award for writers under 35. Her short stories and essays have appeared in the New Yorker, McSweeney’s, A Public Space, Cabinet, Esquire, The Believer, Tin House, and on the radio program This American Life. Her work has been translated into eight languages. “Hunt’s play, The Difference Engine,” a story about the life of Charles Babbage, was produced by the Theater of the Two-Headed Calf. Hunt teaches at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.

Judge: Rae Armantrout

Rae Armantrout is the author of ten books of poetry, including Versed, Next Life, Up to Speed, and Veil: New and Selected Poems. She has been published in The Oxford Book of American Poetry and Scribner’s Best American Poetry, and in magazines including Harpers, The New Yorker, American Poetry Review, Boston Review, Chicago Review, and the Los Angeles Times Book Review. She has also received awards from the Guggenheim Foundation (2008), the Fund for Poetry (1999 and 1994) and the California Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship (1989). Armantrout is a professor of writing in the literature department at the University of California at San Diego.
